Magpie Environmental Trust Composting Workshops

Primary/Junior Schools
In association with BinArt, Magpie have also developed a puppet show based workshop for younger children which again looks at showing how kitchen and garden rubbish can be turned into a valuable resource and engages them in activities to reinforce the messages about what can and can’t be composted.

Liam Brosnan from Westdene Primary said “Year 3 said that Creature Composting was brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed the show, as did year 5 who were smiling from ear to ear telling me all about it.”

Jo Bolton from Saltdean Primary said:
“Just wanted to provide some feedback on Creature Composting - it was fantastic! All children (and adults) really enjoyed it. It was pitched at the right level for their age group and definitely got the message across.”

Secondary Schools
Magpie currently offer workshops aimed at children in Keystage 3 to secondary schools in the Brighton & Hove area. The objectives of the workshops are to:

Explain the benefits of composting in the context of the environment, soil, plants and people

Show students how kitchen and garden rubbish can be turned from waste into a valuable resource

Engage students in activities and provide sources of information that will encourage them to set up compost sites both in the school grounds and at home

Where possible link into the schools plans relating to Eco Schools

Jason O’Grady from Hove Park made these comments about the workshops run at his school
“So far, the workshops have definitely been useful, and I am intending to base part of our EcoSchool bid around recycling/composting in the school next year. The general idea is to have a compost bin by each of the canteens (at upper and lower sites) so that the staff can separate organic/vegetable waste and the Eco kids can organise filling it into the composter. The composter itself can then be used as a working resource for delivery of the environmental part of the Science curriculum at both sites.”

Compost Bins & Wormeries
We can also provide follow-up visits for all schools wishing to carry out composting projects in the school grounds and can help set up compost bins and wormeries where needed. See latest news page for more details
